National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is an annual event promoting progress in reducing the HIV stigma, encouraging testing, treatment, and increasing HIV education in communities of color. According to the CDC, “In 2018, Black/African American people accounted for 13% of the US population but 42% (16,002) of the 37,968 new HIV diagnoses in the United States and dependent areas.” Many black individuals may fear seeking to get tested stemming from discrimination, homophobia, rejection, limited access to healthcare, and judgment from others. It is crucial to get tested and know your status to take proper treatment if infected and remain undetectable.

However, some progress has been made among the African American community. According to HIV.gov, “From 2014 to 2018, HIV diagnoses declined 7% among African American people overall in the United States and dependent areas. Among African American men, HIV diagnoses declined 6%, and among African American women, HIV diagnoses declined 10%.” Although this is a step further to progress in ending the epidemic, there’s still work to be done. The creation of NBHAAD formed a collaboration among black advocacy groups to come together and prevent the spread of HIV in their communities. The transformative power of the community can make a significant change in getting one step closer to improving our health outcomes.

HealthMerch helps organizations prepare unique outreach initiatives that will advance communities nationwide in forming a conversation about sexual health. We understand the importance of educating communities and informing individuals how to take preventative measures if not diagnosed already. On NBHAAD, public health must come together to prioritize the health concerns of African American people. Our pre-designed NBHAAD swag is a great way to spark conversation and encourage individuals to get involved!
